It Happened This Weekend In Country Music History

1946 Happy Birthday Howard Bellamy  born on this day in Darby, Florida. Along with sibling David, The Bellamy Brothers net over 25 hits from 1979-1990, including“Let Your Love Flow” and “Reggae Cowboy”

1959 It was on this day that Waylon Jennings, gave up a seat on the plane that killed Rock pioneer Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens near Mason City, Iowa.  Waylon Jennings was Holly’s bass player.

1962 Happy Birthday Clint Black  born on this day in Long Branch, New Jersey. Raised in Houston, he earns the Country Music Association’s 1989 Horizon award at the outset of a career that includes “A Better Man,” “Something That We Do” and “Put Yourself In My Shoes”

1965 Happy Birthday Confederate Railroad keyboard player Chris McDaniel born on this day in Rock Springs, Georgia. Leaning on southern rock, the band scores 1990s hits with “Trashy Women,”

1974 Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” goes to #1 on the Billboard country singles chart.

1993 The “Pure Country” soundtrack goes double-platinum for George Strait.  The album includes #1 single “I Cross My Heart” and “Heart Land”

1995 Pam Tillis earns her first #1 single in Billboard with “Mi Vida Loca (My Crazy Life)”

1996 Shania Twain hits the top of the Billboard country chart with “(If You’re Not In It For Love) I’m Outta Here!”

1999 Freddy Fender receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles

2008 Brad Paisley’s “Letter To Me” occupies the #1 position on the Billboard country singles chart, where it remains the rest of the month.

2008  George Strait’s single “I Saw God Today” is released to country radio.

2014 “This Is How We Roll,” by Florida Georgia Line featuring Luke Bryan, is released to country radio.
