If you didn’t know, last Thursday was National Popcorn Day in the U.S. and Canada. Popcorn was invented in 1885 and is a widely popular snack food usually paired with butter and a good movie and generally served in a red and white striped container. Last Thursday on National Popcorn Day two police say officers saw a man on the street on holding a popcorn box just like that in Guelph, Ontario. The officers knowledge of popcorn and national days has helped police officers in southwestern Ontario arrest an alleged drug trafficker. They stopped to wish him a “happy national popcorn day,” which is celebrated every Jan. 19, and were surprised when the man promptly fled the scene. Officers chased the man due to suspicion of running from a police officer. Police allege that once they caught up to him, they discovered that he was carrying drugs. A 31-year-old man is charged with two counts of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.
