California Woman Admits To Faking Her Own Kidnapping

Nearly six years after her kidnapping made headlines, a California woman has admitted she faked the whole thing. Sherri Papini, 39, has issued a statement in which she admits she confesses she wasn’t abducted when she disappeared for 22 days in 2016. “I am deeply ashamed of myself for my behavior and so very sorry for the pain I’ve caused my family, my friends, all the good people who needlessly suffered because of my story and those who worked so hard to try to help me,” the statement reads. “I will work the rest of my life to make amends for what I have done.”

Papini hasn’t offered a reason for the hoax. Papini, who’s been charged with lying to FBI agents, was found tied up on Thanksgiving Day 2016 with a brand on her shoulder, a swollen nose and other injuries. Prosecutors now say those injuries were self-inflicted, and Papini had been staying with an ex-boyfriend while dozens of law enforcement officials and volunteers searched for her. She faces up to 25 years in prison if she’s convicted, prosecutors say.

Should Papini be forced to pay for all the hours that were wasted on her?
